John C. Smith has more than 30 years of senior leadership experience with the insurance industry’s leading brokerage firms.
He most recently served as Executive Vice President with Crystal & Company and held senior positions with Marsh, Inc. and Johnson & Higgins for more than two decades.
In his role as Vice Chairman, member of the Board of Directors and partner of Palmer & Cay, John plays a pivotal role in developing the firm’s long-range strategy and expanding its focus on specialty industry niches and risk management services. His initial focus is to build Palmer & Cay’s presence in New York and the Northeast Region where the firm will focus on middle market and large commercial companies, with a particular emphasis on the private equity sector.
During his tenure at Marsh, John rose in the ranks to lead the firm’s Northeast Zone and was named to Marsh’s Executive Leadership and MMC Global Leadership Committees. During his career with Marsh, John served as leader of the Northeast Middle Market Practice, Office Head of the New England Region, and leader of the Risk Management Client Services practice in New York. As managing director of Marsh’s Northeast Zone, John was responsible for seven regional offices and more than 350 insurance professionals.
An active member of his local community, John currently serves as a board member of Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (SPLIA) and has served as Co-President of Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club in Locust Valley, NY, was elected to the Board of Overseers for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and was named Chairman for the North Shore University Hospital’s Summer Picnic Concert.
He has served as a Board member of Spencer Educational Foundation, member and Associate Trustee of the Executive Committee for North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System, member of the Business & Friends Committee – Boston Symphony Orchestra, and President of the Board of Trustees of the Rectory School in Pomfret, CT.
John earned a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College and is a graduate of Kents Hill School, Kents Hill, Maine.
